Monday Morning Moneyball: Week 2- Big Apple Stars Are Born!

Welcome to Monday Morning Moneyball! Week 2 provided us with two New York tales of triumph that not only bucked old trends, but also may have unveiled the dawn of a new quarterback era in green and wide receiver tandem in blue. We start with the J-E-T-S, JETS JETS JETS! All week, media outlets all over the country have been replaying Rex Ryan’s message to the Jets season ticket holders. 70 seconds of fanfare and propaganda from Ryan begged for support over and beyond the norm from the Jets faithful, and his message was reiterated by Kerry Rhodes and several other Jets players, and the message was simple: We can beat the Patriots. That they did, 16-9, showing off their Baltimore style dominant defense that Ryan has brought over from the Raven dynasty. While I’ll delve into New England’s deficiencies in my Money Bites below, praise needs to be given to Mark Sanchez for his 2nd consecutive strong performance. While his numbers weren’t gaudy (14 of 22, 163 yards with 1 TD, 0 Int), his 101.1 passer rating is indicative of his efficient performance. Sanchez did everything Ryan and the Jets could ask of him in his rookie season. He stayed away from risky unnecessary throws, threw for a 65% completion percentage in the second half and executed on big plays down the stretch, including the go-ahead touchdown strike to Dustin Keller. Watch out young QB society, Tom Brady, and everyone else in the AFC, if Sanchez keeps up this act, the Jets will be a team to be reckoned with come January.

With the MLB playoffs set to begin, there is a subtle difference in the air compared to start of any other postseason. In the NHL, fans can potentially look forward to a great Canadians/Bruins series that is not only exciting, but has a historical kick to it. Likewise basketball fans always have the chance to see if the Suns can finally get past the Spurs and football fans love seeing the rivalry of the Eagles Vs the City of Philadelphia when the Eagles so much as get tackled for a loss.

A big congratulations to Chris Cooley, who, along with his PR team, recently discovered that there's no such thing as bad publicity, even when it actually is bad publicity.

By now you've probably heard the story, how Chris "accidentally" took a picture of himself naked reading a quiz before last Sunday's Saints game.  The story spread like wildfire around the blogosphere and to the big media outlet, making Cooley even more of a household name, although not necessarily for something that he might be too happy about.  CNN even had it on their main page for a while.

I had the chance a few weeks ago to meet Heath Shuler, now a Congressman from North Carolina, but who was once the next great Redskins quarterback.  I write about this because it was about 2 days after Trent Dilfer had announced his retirement after 14 years in the NFL, and I couldn't help but think about the irony of the situation.   It got me thinking about what the last 14 years could have been like for the Redskins had Shuler worked out.

Dan Snyder, the Washington Redskins owner is easily the Bonny to Taylor Clyde, the Jessica Simpson to Tony Romo, the proverbial Ying to his Yang. Not only does Snyder has a love for the big name splash (as he always looks for the opportunity to flex his testicular fortitude at Division big wig, hot head rival Owner Jerry Jones), not only does he have an entertainment company featuring Scientologist Tom Cruise, but he actually has a need for a devensive end/outside linebacker who can rush the quarterback. That Taylor can do.

Congratulations! You've stumbled upon my new blog. Since I'm a student and have very little credibility when it comes to sports (just a foaming-at-the-mouth passion), you're just going to have to trust me at first.

Be afraid. Be very afraid. If you are a Redskins fan, you are now officially not allowed to be a fan of owner/dictator/poor decision maker snyder, dan. Please note that when I really dislike a sports figure associated with a team that I support, I always use the 'Last Name, First Name' description. Example: Gardner, Rod. Ugh.
