As America (and London) prepare for the NFL’s week eight schedule tomorrow, these are bleak times. I know that this isn’t a political or social venue, but I just wanted to fire off some quick words of appreciation for our beloved sport.

If someone read my posts about the Jacksonville Jaguars this year, they'd probably think I was bipolar. Hopeful, pessimistic, optimistic, frustrated, depending on the day. But it's actually not me that's biplar; it's the Jags. One week they are beating the Colts or the Broncos and the next week they are losing to the Bills or the Browns (the Browns, really?!!). One week they are losing at the last minute to the Steelers, another week they are surviving the last minute against the Texans.

In the MLB, when you lose your first two games, no big deal. 160 to go. In the NBA, you lose your first two games, and there's still 80 left. But in the NFL, your first two games are one eighth of the season. Playoff teams usually lose a maximum of seven, and this year's Jacksonville Jaguars already has two of those losses. Panic time?

Though they don't seem as devastating as the Soriano/Pujols loss I wrote about yesterday, two key players have gone down on two other teams today. Cleveland put Victor Martinez on the DL, while Seattle placed its once-reliable closer JJ Putz back on the DL, both with elbow injuries. And unlike Soriano's freak fracture, there were hints at undiagnosed problems with both Martinez and Putz.

Am I satisfied with the investigation...I said no, no, no.
Try to make me believe its over...I say no, no, no.
Sen A Spector from PA is not cool with how the NFL handled this whole thing. Know what? Neither am I. I'm just not ready to go federal on this piece. The real issue here is that pro sports leagues, despite the big words and demonstrative speaches, have dwindling accountability. They are the only 'game' in town and that's how they behave. I think this is the larger issue here. Forget Spygate (actually don't. I couldn't believe how easy the despicable Pats got off. And it's not just the video stuff; they thumb their noses at league rules and no one says squat).

And the dance continues. I'm retired...I'm not. I'm planning on it while an entire organization is held hostage. So Brett Favre is retiring. This is apparantly, judging by the coverage on ESPN and Sports Illustrated, is the story of the year so far. I don't get it. Whatever it takes to have people unconditionally love you, Favre has it. I just don't think it's deserved.

After 17 years as the Green Bay Packers quarterback, the legendary and future hall of famer 3 time MVP Brett Favre is set to retire.
"I know I can still play, but it's like I told my wife, I'm just tired mentally. I'm just tired," Favre, a three-time NFL MVP, told ESPN's Chris Mortensen in a voice mail message.

The NFL Free Agency signing period begins at midnight tonight. This is always one of the weirdest things in the sports calendar. Football is such a unique game. Sometimes a great player for one team won't be a great player anywhere else. A 3-4 end could be a special teams player on a 4-3 team. A big 1100 yard receiver could collect dust on a team that runs the west coast offense.

Young, homegrown talent played a significant part in the Red Sox title run last year led by Dustin Pedroia winning the Rookie of the Year and Jonathan Papelbon definitively closing out games. Clay Buchholz pitched a no hitter in his second major league start, Jacoby Ellsbury stepped in when he was needed and became a vital part of the offense, and Jon Lester got the win in the World Series clincher. All are expected to be key contributors to the team this season. However, this influx of talent from the minors has not left this cupboard bare as Boston’s farm system still ranks in Baseball America’s top 5. Here are some of the next big prospects to keep an eye on in camp this spring and follow their progress this summer.

Cheating. Dictionary.com defines cheating as: 'To violate rules deliberately, as in a game'
The Patriots cheated. The thing that got lost in Spygate was the explanation that Belichick gave for the 'mistake'. So astounding. Billy Bud and the Pats brushed it off as a mistake; a 'missinterpretation of the rules'. I don't even know where to begin on that.

Who knew? Did anyone have any idea that the 3 year old goofy kid who couldn't talk yet would eventually be the Super Bowl MVP? I sure didn't. How do I know that he couldn't talk? I got it from an awkward interview during hour 11 of the Super Bowl gameday coverage. Terry 'fake laughing at Frank Caliendo's Segments' Bradshaw interviewed Archie Manning.

I have never claimed to be an expert when it comes to predicting outcomes of football games, although last year I nearly predicted the exact final score of the Super Bowl while hitting on seven of my nine prop bets. (My prediction was 26-17, the final was 29-17.) For whatever reason I had a very good feel for that game. This year's Super Bowl, however, remains a mystery to me. Part of the reason I am having trouble getting a good feel for this game is that I am a bitter Jets fan and I can't stand either team. I'm finding it difficult to put my personal feelings aside and look at the game objectively. I think right now I am as close to objectivity as I am going to get, and with that being said, here is my official Super Bowl XLII prediction.
