And the dance continues. I'm retired...I'm not. I'm planning on it while an entire organization is held hostage. So Brett Favre is retiring. This is apparantly, judging by the coverage on ESPN and Sports Illustrated, is the story of the year so far. I don't get it. Whatever it takes to have people unconditionally love you, Favre has it. I just don't think it's deserved.
His consecutive start streak is the most impressive thing about him It speaks to his longevity and his playing at a high level all the time. To me, that's where the compliments should end.
I know a lot of people won't agree with this. Doesn't matter to me. I am the minority opinion. It's about discourse people. Here's why I don't love Brett Favre:
-The selfishness- Every year, this prolonged period of 'I don't know what my decision is' held the Packers hostage. How should they draft? What free agents should they target? They didn't know until a couple days before mini camp. Let alone the impact that the Brett Favre ego had on Aaron Rogers. I read a couple of accounts (couldn't find the links. Sorry) where Favre literally hasn't lifted a finger to give any wisdom to his heir apparent. Rogers has said all the right things about Favre but I get the sense it's because Rogers is smart enough to know you don't bash America's bald eagle quarterback.
-The media drooling- He gives good quotes and shows his emotions. His southern 'aw shucks' attitude makes the masses drool and ignore the message. When the Packers were bad, he ran everyone under a bus; demanding actions from the Packers management. Don't believe me? Did you forget about his complaints before the 07 season about not getting Randy Moss? That's just one example.
-Gunslinger-oh man does this piss me off. BAD DECISIONS. That's what gunslinger means. I wouldn't want him, outside of the years when they Pack had the most talent in the league, to QB my team in a big game. I would know that a critical forced play would kill us. He is the interception king for a reason. For every amazing play when he threw it up for grabs...he threw it up for grabs and it got picked off. No player has had more team killing plays over the course of his career. You were always a couple snaps away from a 3 pick game.
-The over-rated place in history-Look, Favre will go to the hall. He deserves it for the 3 straight MVPs and the Super Bowl. My beef with him is that he is even involved in any 'greatest of all time' discussions. According to the pro football prospectus, not a single one of Brett Favre's seasons ranks in the top 50 seasons by a QB. Not one. Kurt Warner has a couple. Favre has 0. Bupkas. How can a guy that has never had a year that approaches the best years of Daunte Culpepper, Kurt Warner or any of the other elite guys who are in 'the conversation' (Marino, Elway, Montana etc.) be considered the greatest? People overhype this guy and overlook the mistakes. Favre was intercepted more and sacked more than any other elite QB while piling up stats against a typically weak division.
Favre gave us a lot of highlights through his historic career, but so did Dominique Wilkins. Anyone think that The Human Highlight Film belongs in the convo with MJ/Wilt/Oscar etc? Congrats on a very good career Favre. Let's all just take a breath and realize that we'll all be fine without Madden saying 'Favre'...
