Roger Clemens. The mercenary pitcher for hire will testify in front of Congress on Wednesday. I am thoroughly conflicted. Here's what is going on in the 6 inches of brain space between my ears.
-I have despised Clemens for years. I have never doubted he cheated after he left Boston as an oft-injured, over-weight, washout and emerged as a workhorse juggernaut with dominant stuff well into his 40s.
-I have loathed his lack of loyalty as he serves Roger and only Roger.
-I despise anyone who holds a team hostage and forces his team to send him to the yankees...and by anyone, I mean Clemens
-I also hate that Congress is involved. There are some other things...just a couple...that I feel like they maybe should focus on.
-I am furious that it took a committee for Major League Baseball to get it's act together. Let me say this clearly: EVERYONE KNEW. At least Bud Selig, despite his years of being an owner's puppet as he turned a blind eye while records fell and butts filled seats, saved some ounce of integrity by saying: 'we all made mistakes'. It was still a copout but it's a start.
-it really burns my cupcakes how Roger Clemens has been so slimy in the aftermath of the Mitchell Report. He refused to answer questions in cooperation with the investigation. He was above the process. He had the chance and now, after his name is dropped like a heavy stone, he is 'stunned' that he could be implicated after 'all he's done for baseball'. What did he do? He made $100 million dollars as a hired part-timer over the last 4 years. The game owes you nothing my friend.
I have blogged before about how I love justice. I do. I love it. I love it when bad people get what's coming to them. I really don't know if Clemens cheated more/less/at all than McNamee is saying. I do know that he is a scumbag. I am relishing this entire process. I want him to have to endure a ton and justify every step of his career. He has avoided scrutiny for his entire career which I have never understood.
No new teams this time. Enjoy your time in our nation's capital. Be sure and tip your waitress.
